After You Pass Part 107: Getting and Keeping Your Remote Pilot Certificate

Passing the knowledge test is the start. Here is what comes next, from the FAA's own rules and guidance.

Apply within 24 months

Your Airman Knowledge Test Report is valid for 24 calendar months for applying for the Remote Pilot Certificate, which you do through IACRA using the FAA Tracking Number you created before the test. You must be at least 16 to hold the certificate.

Staying current

To keep acting as remote pilot in command, you must complete recurrent training within the previous 24 calendar months. It is training, not another test.

Before every flight

  • Check NOTAMs for temporary flight restrictions.
  • Run the IMSAFE self-check: Illness, Medication, Stress, Alcohol, Fatigue, Emotion.
  • Use PAVE to list hazards: Pilot, Aircraft, enVironment, External pressures.

Good decisions in the air

The FAA teaches the DECIDE model (Detect, Estimate, Choose, Identify, Do, Evaluate) and five hazardous attitudes with their antidotes: anti-authority ("follow the rules"), impulsivity ("not so fast, think first"), invulnerability ("it could happen to me"), macho ("taking chances is foolish") and resignation ("I'm not helpless").

Equipment risks

  • Lithium batteries can catch fire from a short circuit, improper charging, extreme heat, crash damage or a defect.
  • Most small drones control over the unlicensed 2.4 and 5.8 GHz bands, shared with Wi-Fi, so interference can cause loss of control and flyaways.

If something goes wrong

Report an accident to the FAA within 10 calendar days if it causes serious injury, loss of consciousness, or more than $500 of damage to property other than the drone.
