FAA Aviation Mechanic General Written Test: Practice Test, Pass Score & How to Pass

Every applicant for an FAA mechanic certificate passes the General written test before the airframe or powerplant test. passvana has a practice track for it: FAA Aviation Mechanic General Test. Here is what the test looks like, from the FAA's own documents.

FAA Aviation Mechanic General Test

  • Questions: 60 multiple-choice questions, each with a single correct response. (FAA-G-ACS-1; FAA Airman Knowledge Testing Matrix)
  • Time allowed: 2.0 hours. (FAA-G-ACS-1; FAA Airman Knowledge Testing Matrix)
  • Passing score: 70 percent. (14 CFR 65.17; FAA-G-ACS-1)

How to pass on your first try

  • Know the regulations by number. Mechanic privileges, record entries and inspection rules come from 14 CFR parts 43, 65 and 91, so learn the rule itself, not just the idea behind it.
  • Practice the calculations. Weight and balance, electrical circuits, mathematics and physics questions give you the numbers and expect a worked answer.
  • Cover all twelve subjects. Each one is at least 5 percent of the test, so a weak subject costs points every time.
  • Take full timed mock exams before test day, so the length and pace of the real test hold no surprises.
