The FAA Aviation Mechanic Powerplant written test is the knowledge test for the powerplant rating. passvana has a practice track for it: FAA Aviation Mechanic Powerplant Test. Here is what the test looks like, from the FAA's own documents.
FAA Aviation Mechanic Powerplant Test
- Questions: 100 multiple-choice questions, each with a single correct response. (FAA-G-ACS-1)
- Time allowed: 2.0 hours. (FAA-G-ACS-1)
- Passing score: 70 percent. (14 CFR 65.17; FAA-G-ACS-1)
How to pass on your first try
- Know both engine families. Reciprocating and turbine engines each have their own subjects, and several others (fuel, ignition, exhaust, air systems) ask about both.
- Practice the calculations. Compression ratio, horsepower, specific fuel consumption, thrust and bypass ratio questions give you the numbers and expect a worked answer.
- Cover all thirteen subjects. Each one is at least 5 percent of the test, so a weak subject costs points every time.
- Take full timed mock exams before test day: 100 questions in 2 hours is a long sitting, so the pace should hold no surprises.
