A few checked facts worth knowing

  • HO-2 Broad Form The dwelling and other structures are insured on a named-perils basis. The HO-3 and HO-5 insure them against direct physical loss (open perils). (ISO HO 00 02 10 00, Sec. I, Perils Insured Against)
  • Causes of loss forms The special form covers direct physical loss unless excluded or limited; the basic and broad forms insure only listed perils. Most exclusions sit in the Causes of Loss form. Mechanical breakdown is excluded, so equipment breakdown cover is bought separately. (ISO CP 10 30 09 17, A, B.2.d(6), C.1)
  • Personal auto, Part A Liability. Pays defense costs in addition to the limit. A split limit (for example 50/100) caps each person and each accident; a combined single limit is one amount per accident. Vehicles with fewer than four wheels are excluded. (ISO PP 00 01 09 18, Part A)
  • In South Carolina, what is an admitted insurer? An insurer licensed to do business in this state. S.C. Code 38-1-20: an admitted insurer means an insurer licensed to do business in South Carolina. (S.C. Code 38-1-20(5))
