Auto questions turn on which part of the policy pays and for whom. Facts below are from the standard ISO forms.
Personal auto policy (ISO PP 00 01)
- Part A, Liability: pays defense costs in addition to the limit. A split limit such as 50/100 caps each person and each accident; a combined single limit is one amount per accident. Vehicles with fewer than four wheels are excluded.
- Part B, Medical Payments: medical and funeral expenses for services within three years.
- Part C, Uninsured Motorists: a hit-and-run vehicle qualifies only with physical contact.
- Part D, Damage to Your Auto: pays the lesser of actual cash value or the cost to repair or replace; transportation expenses are $30 a day up to $900.
- Newly acquired autos: when the Declarations show collision on at least one auto, the insured must ask for coverage within 14 days of becoming the owner.
Business auto (ISO CA 00 01)
- Covered auto symbols: Symbol 2 is owned autos only, including later purchases; Symbol 8 is hired autos; Symbol 9 is non-owned autos used in the business, including employees' own cars.
- The business auto form pays up to $2,000 for bail bonds.
Garage coverage (ISO CA 00 05)
Garagekeepers coverage addresses legal liability for a customer's auto in the shop's care. A customer using a covered auto is an insured only if no other insurance is available.
