A few checked facts worth knowing
- Commissioner The Commissioner of Insurance is elected like other State officers and serves a four-year term beginning January 1 after the election; the Governor fills a vacancy only for the unexpired term. (N.C. Gen. Stat. 58-2-5)
- Waiver No permission or waiver is valid unless granted in the policy or written and added to it; appraisal or examination steps waive nothing. (N.C. Gen. Stat. 58-44-16(f)(9))
- Emergency vs Regular Program Emergency Program is the initial phase with limited coverage; the Regular Program has a Flood Insurance Rate Map in effect and full limits. FEMA delivers flood through Write-Your-Own companies and NFIP Direct. (44 CFR 61 App. A; FEMA, Flood Insurance)
- Workers' compensation coverage The Act covers private employments with three or more employees regularly employed in the same business (with exceptions such as domestic service and small agricultural employers). Employers must insure with an authorized insurer or mutual association, or be licensed to self-insure. (N.C. Gen. Stat. 97-2(1); N.C. Gen. Stat. 97-93(a))
