North Carolina Property & Casualty Insurance Exam: Practice Test, Pass Score & How to Pass

North Carolina licenses property and casualty insurance agents through state exams, and passvana has a practice track for each one: North Carolina Property Agent Exam, North Carolina Casualty Agent Exam, North Carolina Personal Lines Agent Exam. Here is what each exam looks like, from the state's official exam documents.

North Carolina Property Agent Exam

  • The exam: The North Carolina Property Agent examination, written to the North Carolina Department of Insurance (NCDOI) content outline and delivered by Pearson VUE. It is a two-part exam: a general part and a state-specific part, scored together as one overall result. (Pearson VUE, North Carolina Insurance Candidate Handbook (#123400), Time Allotted for Exams; Pearson VUE, North Carolina Insurance Content Outlines (#123415, eff. 3/2/2026))
  • Questions: 55 scored four-option multiple-choice questions plus up to 5 pretest questions. Pretest questions gather statistics and do not affect the score. (Pearson VUE, North Carolina Insurance Content Outlines (#123415, eff. 3/2/2026), Property Agent Content Outline)
  • Time: 1 hour 15 minutes for both parts together. Watch the clock so the second part gets enough time. (Pearson VUE, North Carolina Insurance Candidate Handbook (#123400), Time Allotted for Exams)
  • Passing score: The passing score is a scaled score of 70, set by NCDOI with Pearson VUE. Scaled scores run 0 to 100 and are not the number or percentage of questions answered correctly; numeric scores are given only to failing candidates. Our practice mock uses 70 percent correct (39 of 55) as its stand-in. (Pearson VUE, North Carolina Insurance Candidate Handbook (#123400), Score Explanation)
  • Who takes it: Applicants for the North Carolina property major line of authority. The property agent exam has no exam exemption, and fingerprints for a criminal history check are required. (Pearson VUE, North Carolina Insurance Candidate Handbook (#123400), NC Licensure Requirements)

How to pass on your first try

  • Know the standard policies section by section. Homeowners, personal auto and commercial coverages are tested as what each part of the policy covers, excludes and requires after a loss.
  • Do not skip the state insurance code. Licensing, producer duties, ethics and cancellation rules are specific to North Carolina and scored like the rest of the exam.
  • Learn notice periods and limits as numbers. Cancellation and nonrenewal notice periods and minimum limits come up as exact figures.
  • Take full timed mock exams before test day, so the length and pace of the real exam hold no surprises.
