Texas Property & Casualty Insurance Exam: Practice Test, Pass Score & How to Pass

Texas licenses property and casualty insurance agents through state exams, and passvana has a practice track for each one: Texas General Lines - Property and Casualty Exam, Texas Personal Lines Property and Casualty Exam. Here is what each exam looks like, from the state's official exam documents.

Texas General Lines - Property and Casualty Exam

  • The exam: The Texas General Lines Property and Casualty agent examination, developed and administered for the Texas Department of Insurance (TDI) by Pearson VUE. A general section tests insurance product knowledge; a state section tests Texas law, rules and practices. The score is for the exam as a whole, not each part. (Pearson VUE, Texas Insurance Candidate Handbook (#124400), Examination Content)
  • Who takes it: Applicants for the general lines property and casualty agent license. Limited property and casualty licenses (for example, crop insurance only) and personal lines licenses have their own exams. (Pearson VUE, Texas Insurance Supplement, Examination Content Outlines (#124401, eff. Sept. 1, 2026); TIC 4051.051, 4051.101)
  • Questions: 130 scored questions plus 15 unidentified pretest questions: the general section has 100 scored plus 10 pretest, the state section 30 scored plus 5 pretest. Pretest answers do not affect the score. (Pearson VUE, Texas Insurance Supplement, Examination Content Outlines (#124401, eff. Sept. 1, 2026), P&C Content Outlines; Pearson VUE, Texas Insurance Candidate Handbook (#124400), Pretest Questions)
  • Time: 150 minutes (exam code InsTC-PC06, English). (Pearson VUE, Texas Insurance Candidate Handbook (#124400), exam list)
  • Passing score: A scaled score of 70, set by the Texas Department of Insurance with Pearson VUE. The reported scaled score (0 to 100) is neither the number nor the percentage of questions you answered correctly. (Pearson VUE, Texas Insurance Candidate Handbook (#124400), Scaled Score)

Texas Personal Lines Property and Casualty Exam

  • The exam: Texas Personal Lines Property and Casualty Exam, given by Pearson VUE for the state. The Personal Lines license covers insurance sold to individuals and families: homeowners, dwelling, personal auto, umbrella and the like, not commercial lines or workers' compensation. (Pearson VUE Texas handbook 124400 and outlines 124401 (eff. 9/1/2026))
  • Questions: 100 scored questions, plus unscored pretest questions mixed in. (Pearson VUE Texas handbook 124400 and outlines 124401 (eff. 9/1/2026))
  • Time: 2 hours. (Pearson VUE Texas handbook 124400 and outlines 124401 (eff. 9/1/2026))
  • Passing score: A scaled score of 70, set by the state; it is not a percentage of questions correct. Our practice mock uses 70% correct (70 of 100) as its stand-in. (Pearson VUE Texas handbook 124400 and outlines 124401 (eff. 9/1/2026))

How to pass on your first try

  • Know the standard policies section by section. Homeowners, personal auto and commercial coverages are tested as what each part of the policy covers, excludes and requires after a loss.
  • Do not skip the state insurance code. Licensing, producer duties, ethics and cancellation rules are specific to Texas and scored like the rest of the exam.
  • Learn notice periods and limits as numbers. Cancellation and nonrenewal notice periods and minimum limits come up as exact figures.
  • Take full timed mock exams before test day, so the length and pace of the real exam hold no surprises.
