To fly a drone commercially in the US you need a Remote Pilot Certificate, and the first step is the FAA's initial aeronautical knowledge test, Unmanned Aircraft General - Small (UAG).
The format
- 60 questions in 2 hours, all multiple choice with a single correct answer. Each question stands alone.
- Passing score: 70%.
- The proctor gives you the FAA's testing supplement, the book of charts and figures the questions refer to. Your own notes are not allowed.
What it covers
The Remote Pilot Airman Certification Standards set the weights: Operations 35-45%, Regulations 15-25%, Airspace and Requirements 15-25%, Weather 11-16%, and Loading and Performance 7-11%.
Before you register
You must be at least 14 to take the test (16 to hold the certificate). First get an FAA Tracking Number by creating an account in IACRA, the FAA's airman application system. The test is given at an Airman Knowledge Testing Center; PSI Services runs the centers and handles registration, scheduling and payment. Bring identification showing your photograph, signature, date of birth and permanent mailing address.
If you fail
Wait 14 calendar days, then retest. No instructor endorsement is needed; bring your failed test report. Cheating bars you from any certificate or test for a year.
After you pass
Your Airman Knowledge Test Report is valid for 24 calendar months for applying for the certificate. See what happens after you pass.
